The tight-knit community of Lincoln is grieving the loss of Derek Klotz, a 17-year-old junior at Lincoln High School, who tragically passed away late Friday night in a car accident. Derek was a passenger in a vehicle that veered off the road and crashed into a tree near Fletcher Avenue and 70th Street at approximately 12:45 a.m.
According to Lincoln Police, the driver of the vehicle, another teenager, lost control while swerving to avoid a deer. The car left the roadway, and despite efforts from first responders, Derek tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Two other occupants of the vehicle survived but sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A memorial service is being planned for Derek by his family, with details to be shared in the coming days. In an effort to honor Derek’s legacy, local students have begun organizing a scholarship fund in his name, aiming to help other young people pursue their dreams, turning this tragic loss into a lasting tribute.
